How to Dump Your Inner Meangirl
In this post I discuss how to dump your inner meangirl and, instead, embrace lovingkindness. When we routinely criticize ourselves, the natural outcome is an unhappy self – along with a critical nature toward others. The way people treat us is surprisingly mostly just a mirror reflection of how we view ourselves. In order to let go of our inner meangirl, we must change our inner dialogue – bestowing upon ourselves a newfound compassion and love.
#1 Switch-it-up exercise. A helpful exercise that reverses negative self-talk is my, “switch-it-up” exercise. Abusive self-talk is toxic to every important component of our life – namely our self-confidence. So, the next time you look in the mirror and begin to think something negative about your body, turn those thoughts upside down by saying – “No. I am not fat and my boobs aren’t saggy. I am curvy and I have healthy, beautiful breasts! I’m so grateful for my healthy breasts.” My advice: Never, ever, ever put yourself down. And when you do, immediately switch-it-up and say the opposite to yourself; something rooted in gratitude and appreciation.
#2 Lovetalk is a slow and gentle process. We never improve through force, hatred or anger. We change and grow for the better when we take things slowly, seeking a gentle improvement, one moment at a time. If you find yourself particularly mean one day, don’t beat yourself up. Say – “I know you’re having a hard day, sweet girl. I’m here for you. Tomorrow will be better.” Over time, those harsh voices will be replaced with a more gentle tone – refreshing your relationship with yourself.
#3 Criticisms toward others are a reflection of what we believe about ourselves. We all have that critical family member who seems to notice every flaw. But the truth is, she is suffering – and merely allowing us to join in on her misery. If you notice really annoying things about others, you are really only seeing your own flaws – in them. We project upon others how we truly feel about ourselves, oftentimes, unknowingly. When we start to love and accept our own flaws, we can’t help but show that same grace to others. Tolerance for the flaws of others is a natural extension of loving ourselves.
#4 God’s lovingkindness toward us is ever-present. Oftentimes we are so much harder on ourselves than God is. Actually, we are always harder on ourselves than God. Why? Because God is grace, truth and love – given to us. What if we treated ourselves with the same lovingkindness that God felt for us? My personal goal is to somehow learn to treat myself with the same sweetness God has shown me – my entire life.
Ideally, you should never put yourself down. Really try to change this. It has made such a difference in my life – to not tolerate meanness towards myself. When the mean voices arise, switch-up that dialogue immediately. Eventually, being nice to yourself will feel natural, and being mean will feel – wrong.
