Everyone wants to look beautiful singing, speaking or acting.
Due to nerves and tension in the body, sometimes we end up looking more awkward and restrained, than we do beautiful. The idea behind a beautiful performer is really just a natural, uninhibited expression of who they truly are. This is what we find most beautiful – honesty.
Read more to find out my 5 tips to look beautiful singing:
#1. Sing what you love.
Nothing is worse than being forced to sing stuff you hate. If you don’t absolutely love it, don’t sing it. Many a college students have been forced into opera when what they really love is pop – which is a surefire way to feel like a caged in animal, rather than operatic angel. Sing what makes you feel alive, free and honest. Pick stuff that reflects your soul and your essence. You will emanate truth, and truth is beautiful.
#2. Sing like you speak.
Oftentimes singers try to be someone else, or try to emulate the voice of another person. Me imitating Christina Aguilera will always feel subpar, but me using my own unique sound to sing “Beautiful” – will result in untouchable beauty. Don’t imitate someone’s vibrato, because you have your own. It is a natural phenomenon of healthy singing and should never be manufactured. Bringing your own style, creativity and nuance to a song makes it uniquely yours. No one can speak or sing like you. So own your natural tone and tamber, and share it with the world.
#3. Relax your face.
Singers should be able to make all kinds of facial expressions – and feel free to express with reckless abandon. Whether you are crying, laughing or prancing around a stage, your face should move freely and naturally, just as in real life. Singers have to emote emotions, and the best way to do this is to relax your facial muscles and move your lips and tongue freely. When you do this, you will feel free and beautiful to express a variety of emotions.
#4. Be vulnerable.
Nothing is more sexy that vulnerability. We love singers because they express who they are in such an open way. The more vulnerable, the more we love them. Being a singer is expressing the most sacred sides of yourself. Not only will the audience want to get close to you, they will most likely want to be you, get close to you, and even date you, too.
#5. Embrace attention.
The feminine spirit loves attention and praise. She is able to stand in the light, and receive love openly. This has always been the hardest part of singing for me. Receiving love from an audience, during and after a performance, hasn’t always been easy. Maybe I was just uncomfortable receiving, and felt more at home when giving? But I have learned, with time, that part of feeling beautiful is to graciously receive. And so when you perform, receive their eyes, ears and words with openness. Don’t fight it, just embrace it.
